Background
In 1952, there was a minor scandal in Cove City society circles when Crawford Glendower married his driver, Lena Li. Some said she was only marrying him for money, or that it would fall apart in a year. Much of the scandal revolved around her being only half his age, as Glendower was nearly forty while Li, 21, had just taken over the position of driver from her father, who had retired the four years prior. Let alone the fact that she was Chinese and Glendower was white. Still, despite the predictions, the marriage lasted. Not coincidentally, the vigilante known as The Nightwraith and his faithful sidekick retired the same year as the wedding was announced.
Not a coincidence, naturally, because Glendower -was- the Nightwraith. His psychic ability to cloud the minds of others did not seem to pass down to his children, so he never told them about it before he passed on a few years ago. Which is why Grandma Lena had to come explain things to their youngest grandson when he woke up invisible on the morning of his fifteenth birthday and couldn't get it to turn off.
Prior to gaining his powers, Miles had always been the easy-going son; the one who seemed pretty much destined to drift through life and not take things particularly seriously. Now he was panicked, and his grandmother was telling him that he'd inherited psychic powers from his grandfather. He needed training, which Lena wasn't particularly qualified to give him, (though she could probably -still- kick him around; she was pretty spry for a woman in her eighties.) This, eventually, led to her digging up some of her husband's old contacts and so Miles transferred in to Steranko in the second half of his Freshman year.
The problems started almost immediately. Largely, they weren't Miles' fault, at least at first; other people simply didn't notice the invisible kid. (Funny how that works, really.) He saw a lot of things that he didn't really need to see, and got run over in gym class or had folks knock him down in the hallway- then he hit his first growth spurt, and they tended to bounce off of -him-, instead. Instead of taking it easy, he started mouthing off just so folks would realize he was there, and he began to regard his powers more of a problem to resolve than anything else. Unfortunately given the nature of his powers, a lot of the standard tricks don't work; makeup, paint and clothes get hidden under the mental field as well. Sarcastic remarks went through pretty well, though.
His first summer, he went back home, or rather, to Grandma Lena's home. She had talked to the administrators, and had a -special- regimen for he grandson. Namely, the one her father had put -her- through when she was training to be the Nightwraith's driver and bodyguard. To say it was hellish would be putting it mildly, but at the end of the summer he could at least defend himself, since eventually someone was going to be able to see through his invisibility and punch him in the nose, or so she figured.
When the new year started, it took him a while to recover to his previous levels of snark; in fact, he was so quiet in class that he was repeatedly marked absent when he was actually -present-. Then a fellow Baldwin resident got the bright idea to start sending new students to his room, telling them that they had to fight the ghost to get into a secret club. This was how he discovered his reflexive ability to generate a psychic field of terror. Several sleepless nights later (and Freshmen in counseling) later, he was back to his usual sarcastic loudmouthed self, but the damage had already been done; he had enough recorded 'absences' that he's going to have to repeat a year. Oh what fun he'll have, being in the same class as several of the freshmen who he scared into bedwetting again. On the upside, he has found an outlet for the things he's seen but didn't want to see, and it even lets him be 'seen' after a fashion; he's joined the student newspaper.
Personality
Sarcastic and long-suffering and fairly cynical, largely as a result of seeing things he didn't really want to see because no one noticed he was there. Something of a class clown, though of the variety that whispers something that someone else laughs about and repeats and gets into trouble for saying more audibly. The school counselors tend to diagnose him as acting out in an effort to get noticed. This is not far off from the truth, as not being noticed is a -real concern- for him.
He feels blind-sided, so to speak, regarding his powers, and is seriously hopeful that the Institute can help get them under control. Tries to live normally despite them, in an impressive case of denial, which is no doubt why he gets a little annoyed at the slowly evolving custom to send Freshmen into his room to 'exorcise the ghost.' Has something of a complex about being accused of abusing his powers— The closest he's come to taking advantage of them is to skip showering for a day or two(His mental influence blocks odors as well, making this easier) or wearing more than his bathrobe to his first period classes.

Complications
The Baldwin Ghost: Someone started a rumor that Miles' room is perpetually empty and is actually haunted by the ghost of a murdered student. As a result, in any give scene, the GM may declare that he's at a penalty for interrupted sleep because some Freshman or transfer student invaded his room to exorcise the evil spirit.
Not fully controlled: This is represented in some respects by his concealment being -always on-, but more importantly, his fear aura isn't entirely under his control either; normally he keeps the area aspect of it 'turned off' via the progression feats, but if startled or injured or under other appropriate circumstances the GM can turn it on, meaning that anyone who gets within 40 feet of him must make a will save vs. Fear, including allies!
Meddling Grandmother: Grandma Lena's a feisty old lady, and keeps track of her grandson's progress. She can show up to cause him trouble or hit him with her cane or harangue him about finding a girlfriend already. (He had one, but they haven't seen a lot of each other lately.)
Jerk: Miles has a rep as being something of a sarcastic jerk. It doesn't help that it is actually -true-, but it can cause him trouble.
Cannot unsee: When you're invisible, people don't pay attention to you. Sometimes this means they'll do things or say things Miles -really- wishes they wouldn't do in front of him.
Notes:
The phantasmal flaw on Glendower's powers means that he shows up in photographs and on surveillance cameras just fine, though you might not see him until after his picture is taken. He's on the student paper because of this discovery.
His 'contacts' and 'well informed' are mostly there to represent that he hears gossip whether he wants to or not; he knows a lot of things that go on in the school.
